Krishna Bahadur Mahara likely to be next Prime Minister

Unified CPN (Maoist) politburo member and in charge of international department Krishna Bahadur Mahara is likely to become the next Prime Minister of Nepal, this scribe has learnt.

Mahara has been put forward as a candidate for the next PM after consensus could not be forged in the names of incumbent PM Madhav Kumar Nepal, Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and vice chairman Babu Ram Bhattarai.

Talks on a suitable alternative was on after the mentioned candidates had one or the other problem to become the PM.

Maoists have a problem with PM Nepal continuing in the position. For chairman Dahal, there is no support from anywhere else other than his party. Nepal's influential southern neighbour does not want Dahal to become the PM. Their sentiments is being implemented in Nepal by ruling parties Nepali Congress and the KP OLi/Madhav Nepal faction of the UML.

Others supporting a Maoist-led government and many leaders within the Maoist party itself don't prefer Prachanda as the next PM.

Babu Ram Bhattarai, a Maoist vice-chairman and a meritocrat, is a preferred candidate from general public as well as the Southern neighbour. However, his chairman Prachanda himself does not want Bhattarai to become the Prime Minister fearing a loss of grip among his party cadres.

That is why, sources say, Mahara has been brought forward for the position of PM.
