Bill for Constituent Assembly term extension filed

A non-governmental bill for the extension of the Constituent Assembly (CA) term has been tabled at the CA secretariat, Sunday.  UML lawmaker Dheerendra Bahadur Shrestha tabled the bill to amend article 64 of the interim constitution in consent with his fellow colleagues in the parliamentary board. Article 64 of the interim constitution has the provisions about the tenure of the CA.

The term of the CA will be two years from its first meeting unless it is dissolved prior to that by passing a resolution, it is mentioned in the interim constitution.

The CA's term is ending on May 28, according  to this provision.

In the amendment proposal tabled by Shrestha, he has proposed to amend article 64 of the interim constitution to, 'the term of the CA will be three years from its first meeting.'

Shrestha said, he tabled the bill to protect the CA as there is no way the constitution can be completed by May 28, now.

A non-governmental bill has been introduced by the ruling party itself as the main opposition Unified CPN (Maoist) is not ready to support a government bill.
