Nepal refuses to sign extradition treaty, rejects India’s request to install air marshall at TIA
Nepal has refused to sign the extradition treaty between Nepal and India during the secretary level bi-nation security talks that concluded in Kathmandu Saturday saying a political consensus at a higher level was required to do so.
Indian home secretary told reporters after the meeting, there had already been an agreement in the extradition treaty, and would be signed soon. Nepal has been putting off signing of the extradition treaty since a long time. India has been trying to pursuade Nepal to sign the treaty on various occassions including Nepal’s Prime Minister’s India visit and Indian foreign secretaries Nepal visit.
India has been lamenting controlling cross border crimes had been difficult due to the lack of extradition treaty. Nepal has also rejected India’s plea to install airmarshall at Tribhuvan International Airport.
At the meeting Nepal and India agreed to exchange information to curb cross-border crimes including transporting fake currency, human traficking, drug smuggling, among others. India has also urged Nepal to curb anti-Indian activities carried out from Nepali land.
