Madhav Kumar Nepal

Madhav Kumar Nepal is the Prime Minister of Nepal. A senior leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), Nepal is considered a relatively honest leader, who has a capacity of bringing differing forces together in Nepali politics.

He led CPN (UML) for about a decade as its general secretary. Madhav Kumar Nepal was a little known name to the general public before Madan Bhandari, the erstwhile general secretary died in an mysterious accident in Dasdhunga.

Madhav Kumar Nepal suddenly came to fame after that. However, he was involved in party politics since 1972. Initially as a student leader and later in different capacities, Nepal has been involved in politics since then.

He also worked as a bank clerk breifly. (This information needs to be confirmed) Nepal was one of the draftsmen of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal in 1990.

Nepal was the deputy prime minister in the nine-month UML government led by Man Mohan Adhikari in 1994.

Nepal's name used to be discussed as likely candidate for the post of the Prime Minister many times in the past. People even used to make joke of him saying he had already tailored garments for use as Prime Minsiter in several occassions.

He even applied for the post of Prime Minister when erstwhile king Gyanendra sought application for the same in one of the mockery of Nepali politics.

Nepal lost from two constituencies in the Constituent Assembly elections in 2008. He resigned as party's general secretary on moral grounds after the shameful defeat of the party as well as his own defeat.

His name was brought forward for the post of President also. Later, given his experience he was brought to the Constituent Assembly to make him the chairman of Constitution Council.

The Maoists, who were in the government then, had proposed for Madhav Kumar Nepal's entry to the CA.
CA member Sushil Chandra Amatya who was nominated by the UML for the post resigned making way for Nepal's entry.

Nepal resigned from the position after being elected the Prime Minsiter.

In the recent general convention of his party, Nepal had wanted to become the chairman, but did not want to contest election. He withdrew after a consensus was not forged.
