Today is Ghatasthapan

The fifteen-day Bada Dashain festival, the greatest festival of Nepali Hindus, has begun today. Today is Ghatasthapana when people worship in various temples and sow maize and barley in such temples or inside the house to make 'jamara' that will be used on the tenth day of the festival.
Dashain is a fifteen day festival, today being the first day. Today is the beginning of what is known as Nava Ratri. During Nava Ratri devotees worship nine different incarnations of goddess Durga.

Acording to Hindu Mythology, Dashain is observed to remember the time when a devil Mahishashur was killed by goddess Durga. The tenth day when victory was achieved is observed as Vijaya Dashami. (Vijaya meaning victory and Dashami meaning tenth.) It is believed victory was achieved on the tenth day of the war.
