Mahashivaratri festival being observed today
KATHMANDU: Mahashivaratri is being celebrated across the country on Wednesday by observing fast and performing pooja in honour of Lord Shiva. Pashupati Area Development Trust said all necessary preparations are made to welcome around 800,000 devotees in the holy site of Pashupatinath Temple, from all over the country and abroad.
Around 4,200 security personnel have been deployed to thwart any untoward
incidents during the festival. PADT, together with police and District Administration Office, has banned the sale and consumption of liquor in and around the sacred site.
Officials have already warned the local pubs against selling liquor. Police have also been keeping tight vigil on people selling and puffing cannabis other than sadhus and sages. PADT h
as mobilised 8,000 volunteers to guide the devotees.
Ambulances have been put on alert to take the devotees to hospital in case of emergency. Health volunteers and paramedics affiliated to various organisations have set up tents to provide services. The festival marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandav- the dance of creation, preservation and destruction and his marriage to goddess Parvati.
