Nepali workers fired, deported from Dubai

An engineering firm in Dubai has fired 108 Nepali workers, along with some Indian and Pakistani workers in accusation of being involved in a strike, Kantipur daily reported.

UAE immigration has started deporting the fired Nepali workers after detaining them for seven days. 90 of them have been deported till Tuesday, while the remaining 18 are still in jail in Dubai.

The fired Nepali workers, who were arrested by Dubai police from the camp they were staying in on August 31, were deported directly from the custody. They were not even allowed to collect their belongings from their residences, the report says.

The Nepali workers have said they were unjustly fired as they were not involved in the strike.

Workers from India and Pakistan had started the strike from August 29 demanding a hike in salary but Nepali workers had continued the work, said Govind Bhandari of Morang, who was fired from the company.

The fired Nepali workers were working as labours, carpenters, masons and steel fixtures. Some of them had worked in the company for as long as nine years.

The company has not even informed the Nepali mission in Abu Dhabi about the incident, contrary to normal practice of informing the concerned embassy while deporting a citizen of that country.

Nepali ambassador to UAE Arjun Bahadur Thapa said, the authorised people of the company have not come in contact. Our people were not even allowed to meet the detained Nepalis, he added.

Saleways Supermarket fined for evading tax

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has decided to fine Rs 114 million to Saleways Supermarket for evading tax.

IRD came to such conclusion after its months-long investigation established, the supermarket had evaded Value Added Tax (VAT) worth Rs 60 million plus income tax worth about Rs 15 million, Nagarik daily reported.

With fines and interest, the department decided to fine Rs 114 million to Saleways.

We have found Saleways had been collecting VAT from customers, but had not been paying the same to the department, an IRD official said.

Likewise, the department also found the supermarket had not been giving bills to customers or mentioning lower amount on the bill than the amount actually charged to the customer to evade income tax.

Tax officers had raided Saleways supermarket in Lalitpur on June 25 and seized ledgers, files and computers.

This is the highest amount of tax evasion as well as the highest amount of penalty slapped by the IRD in the country’s history.

Saleways has supermarkets in Lalitpur and Pokhara.

Proprietor of Saleways supermarket Sudhir Pradhanang expressed oblivion towards IRD’s decision. We will take necessary steps, once we get to know about the decision, said Pradhanang.
